Scheme 1 - Earley / Reading Active Travel Route

About this scheme proposal

The council has determined the potential for more local cycle journeys to be made across Earley and connecting with Reading Borough, or major employment sites like Thames Valley Park Business Park, if more safe and direct cycle facilities were available. Through the Active Travel Fund, the council is considering implementing a scheme that will provide dedicated facilities and a safer, low speed route to benefit cyclists and pedestrians.

Importantly the views of the local community can help determine how this route should be developed, and how it could present the greatest benefit in principle if developed into a more detailed scheme proposal. Therefore, the purpose of this community engagement exercise is to gather your views at an early stage and help shape future investment plans.

Through some initial analysis of movement patterns in Earley to determine potential route connections with Reading Borough and Thames Valley Park Business Park, the following scheme proposals have been identified:

  • Introducing cycle facilities on old London Road from the junction with Pitts Lane
  • Introducing a 20mph speed limit and side road treatments on old London Road to improve crossings for pedestrians
  • In addition to the proposed above, the scheme will extend to either:

  • Option 1 to connect with Suttons Seeds Roundabout and the borough boundary for onward connections with Reading.
  • Or

  • Option 2 to otherwise connect with Thames Valley Park Business Park via Shepherd's House Lane.
  • Linking local destinations

This route has the potential to provide dedicated, segregated provision for cyclists for a route between Earley and Reading (via the A4 corridor). The image below provides a concept illustrations of the scheme proposals.
