Scheme 3 - Wokingham Town Centre / A329 London Road

About this scheme proposal

Wokingham Borough Council has delivered cycling infrastructure in recent years along the A329 corridor, based on the potential to develop this route as an important active travel connection serving many key destinations. This investment also supports the continued development of the National Cycle Network Route 422.

There is currently a lack of dedicated infrastructure for cyclists on the section between Rances Lane and Wokingham Town Centre.

Through the Active Travel Fund, the council is considering implementing a scheme that will provide dedicated facilities and a safer, low speed route to benefit cyclists and pedestrians. Specifically, this proposal includes:

  • Providing a protected space for cycling, separated from the carriageway with low-level kerbing between the A329/Rances Lane junction and the A329/Seaford Road junction. This would include a two-way segregated cycle track on the southern side of the A329.
  • Introducing a 20mph zone, supported by surface treatments, between the junction of A329/Seaford Road and through residential streets (Wescott Road and Goodchild Road) to their junctions with Easthampstead Road. This section of the scheme would likely be introduced as a pilot initially, using a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO). The proposals would not restrict motor vehicle access on these local streets, but would support lower vehicle speeds on these streets including in the vicinity of local schools.
  • Improving journey on foot and by pedal cycle to local destinations

These scheme proposals relate to a primary corridor which carries high volumes of traffic to and through central Wokingham. Currently there is a lack of dedicated provision for those who may wish to make journeys on foot or by pedal cycle. This scheme intends to improve access for people wishing to travel this way without restricting access to motor vehicles.

The council believe this scheme can provide a cost-effective solution that supports active travel and provides safe connections to local destinations including St Crispin's School and Westende Junior School, local leisure facilities and to the town centre from the local area.
