Scheme 2 - Woodley / Reading Active Travel Route

About this scheme proposal

The council has discovered the potential for more local cycle journeys to be made across Woodley and connecting with Reading Borough, if more safe and direct cycle facilities were available. Through the Active Travel Fund, the council is considering implementing a scheme that will provide dedicated facilities and a safer, low speed route to benefit cyclists and pedestrians.

Importantly the views of the local community can help determine which route would present the greatest benefit to be developed into a more detailed scheme proposal. Therefore, the purpose of this community engagement exercise is to gather your views at an early stage and help shape future investment plans.

Through some initial analysis of movement patterns in Woodley to determine potential route connections with Reading Borough, the following scheme proposals has been identified:

  • Provide segregated cycle facilities between the junction of Woodlands Avenue/Lytham Road (Woodley) and the junction of Woodlands Avenue/Church Road (B3350)
  • In addition to the proposed above, the scheme will extend to either:

  • Option 1 to also provide segregated cycle facilities on Church Road connecting with the junction at Anderson Avenue. Then to provide segregated cycle facilities on Anderson Avenue (taking advantage of a quiet route) connecting with the junction at Culver Lane for a connection with Reading via Palmer Park Avenue.
  • Or

  • Option 2 to provide segregated cycle facilities on Church Road connecting with the junction at Culver Lane. Then to provide segregated cycle facilities on Culver Lane for a connection with Reading via Palmer Park Avenue.
  • Linking local destinations

This route has the potential to provide dedicated, segregated provision for cyclists for a route between Woodley and Reading (via Palmer Park Avenue). The route would also support safe cycling connections to local destinations such as The Bulmershe School, Addington School and Highwood Primary School.
